When to Mail Christmas Cards in 2026 (US Deadlines + Backup Plan)

Late October is the right week to decide how you are sending Christmas cards. Mail moves slowly in December, and international postage needs even more lead time. Use the dates below as a planning guide, then confirm the official USPS holiday shipping deadlines when they publish the 2026 schedule (usually mid-November).

Week-by-week Christmas card plan for 2026

• Now through early November: pick designs, write your list, order printable or printed cards.
• Mid-November: print at home (or order prints), address envelopes, buy stamps.
• Late November (right after Thanksgiving): mail domestic cards so they arrive before the December rush.
• Early December: last comfortable window for most U.S. First-Class mail if you want cards under the tree by Christmas Eve.
• International: aim to mail 3–4 weeks before Christmas, earlier for distant countries or economy postage.

Typical U.S. mailing windows (verify with USPS each year)

• Domestic First-Class letters: historically, mailing by roughly Dec 15–18 still works for Christmas delivery in most of the U.S., but earlier is safer in busy metro areas.
• Priority Mail: often a few days later than First-Class — still do not wait until Christmas week.
• International First-Class / Priority: often early to mid-December depending on destination; check USPS international holiday deadlines.
• Military APO/FPO/DPO: usually earlier than civilian domestic — check the USPS military mail holiday chart.

Always double-check USPS.com for the official 2026 holiday deadlines once they are posted. Treat the plan above as a buffer, not a guarantee.

If you already missed the mail window

1. Hand-deliver cards to neighbors, coworkers, teachers and local family.
2. Print tonight with an instant-download card and slip it into a gift or leftover tin.
3. Send a New Year card instead — January 1–10 still feels thoughtful, and postage is quieter.
4. Email a photo card as a backup, then mail a real card when rates and lines calm down.
