Christmas Card Messages for Family: What to Write for Everyone

Writing family cards should be easy, but staring at a blank card for your mother-in-law can stall the whole stack. Here are short, ready-to-use messages for each family member, plus a simple formula you can adapt for anyone.

The simple formula

Greeting + one specific thing + a wish for the year ahead. For example: "Merry Christmas, Mom! Thank you for driving me to every appointment this spring. Here's to a calmer, happier 2027." That's all a great family card needs.

For parents

• "Merry Christmas, Mom and Dad. Everything good about the holidays, I learned from you."
• "Thank you for always having a seat at the table for us. Love you both."
• "Dad, thanks for every fixed tire and every pep talk this year. Merry Christmas!"

For grandparents

• "Merry Christmas, Grandma! Your kitchen will always smell like Christmas to me."
• "Grandpa, thank you for the stories, the fishing trips and the endless patience."

For siblings

• "Merry Christmas to the only person who knows exactly how weird our family is."
• "Sis, you're my favorite. Don't tell the others. Happy holidays!"
• "Brother, here's to another year of stolen fries and inside jokes."

For in-laws

• "Thank you for welcoming me into the family. Wishing you a warm and happy Christmas."
• "Merry Christmas! We're so grateful for your help with the kids this year."

For your partner

• "Every Christmas with you is my favorite one. I love you."
• "Our first Christmas together, and the first of many. Merry Christmas, my love."

For relatives far away

• "We miss you this Christmas and are counting down to our next visit."
• "Sending love across the miles. Merry Christmas from all of us."
