Thanksgiving Trivia Party Ideas for Family Dinner or Friendsgiving

A short Thanksgiving trivia round keeps everyone at the table between dinner and pie, and it gives shy guests something to do besides scroll their phones. You do not need a PowerPoint or a host with a microphone. Print a one-page quiz, split into teams, and set a 10-minute timer.

How to run trivia in 15 minutes

1. Print one quiz sheet per team (or one per person if the table is small). Fold or cut so answers stay hidden until scoring.
2. Make teams of 2–4. Mix ages so kids and grandparents sit together. Name teams after side dishes: Team Stuffing, Team Cranberry, Team Rolls.
3. Read questions aloud or let teams work quietly for 8–10 minutes. Quiet mode works better in a loud kitchen.
4. Score together. One point per correct answer. Tiebreaker: who can name the most pies without looking at dessert.
5. Give a silly prize. Leftover pie slice, a dollar-store turkey hat, or "first pick of leftovers" works.

Easy question categories that always land

• Food history: when cranberry sauce was first canned, why turkey became the default bird, what "dressing" vs stuffing means.
• Holiday movie / pop culture: classic Thanksgiving episodes, parade floats, football traditions.
• Family fill-in: leave 2–3 blank lines for "who always burns the rolls" style questions only your table can answer.
• True or false: fast for kids and keeps scoring simple.

Sample questions you can steal tonight

• True or false: the first Thanksgiving lasted three days. (True.)
• Which U.S. president made Thanksgiving a national holiday? (Abraham Lincoln, 1863.)
• About how many pounds of turkey do Americans eat on Thanksgiving Day in total? (Hundreds of millions — accept "a lot" with a laugh, then reveal the real estimate.)
• What bird did Benjamin Franklin allegedly prefer as a national symbol over the bald eagle? (The turkey.)
• Name three traditional sides that are not mashed potatoes. (Stuffing, green bean casserole, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, rolls, etc.)

Make it a Friendsgiving tradition

At Friendsgiving, run trivia after the main course and before dessert. Put the quiz under each place card so guests notice it when they sit down. Pair trivia with gratitude cards: after scoring, go around the table and read one "thankful for" line out loud.

No printer at home?

Print at a library, office or drugstore copy center on letter paper, then cut at the table. Cardstock is nicer for place cards but regular paper is fine for a quiz.
